Proper color coordination is critical for a professional on-air look.
Tie Color
It’s best to pick a tie that shows professionalism. Stick with primarily dark colors; they evoke authority and give you a clean look.
Pantone Colors
For inspiration, I’ve included the newest Pantone colors that you’ll be seeing in clothing this Spring and Summer. I’ve chosen the colors that will work best for your on-air tie purchases.
Red
Red is a ‘powerful’ color that people are attracted to. It has always been seen as a color that shows strength and passion.

Purple
Purple shows people you are self- confident. People who see purple relate it to royalty and wealth, which creates a lasting impression that will help you build professional relationships with others. Purple also shows you are modern and open-minded.

Blue
Blue is the safest color to wear. When people think of blue, their first thoughts are the ocean and sky, which helps them feel calm and trust you more.
If you are looking to wear a lighter blue, it can help you be seen as friendly and approachable, while a darker blue will help people trust your decisions.

Inkwell & Burnt Orange
And finally, Inkwell and Burnt Orange.
Inkwell looks black but is actually a deep navy.

Tie Material
A good tie should strike a balance between not wrinkling easily and draping well. Silk and polyester ties are popular choices, the former the more expensive one and the latter the cheaper of the two. Knit ties are in style but they don’t hold their shape as well and it’s difficult to tie a symmetrical knot.
Proportion
The length and width of the tie are equally important. For the length, you should size up your torso and get the tie that reaches the top of the belt buckle.
The proportions of the shirt collar, tie, and lapel are often overlooked. The key is to coordinate the widths of all three, which should complement the width of your face. The thinner your face, the thinner the tie, etc.
